History
  • In historical references, the name of today¡¯s Gwacheon first appeared in 1413, the 13th year of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty. Going back to 475 during the Goguryeo kingdom, this area was called by two names, Yulmok or Dongsahil, with Dongsahil interpreted to mean sunrise village. From long ago, this area has been a transport junction connecting the southern provinces and the capital Hanyang ( present Seoul). King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty stopped here on trips to visit the tomb of his father, Sado Seja.

  • The name changed to Yuljin-gun County under the jurisdiction of Hansanju Province
